Finland's flag is a blue Nordic cross on a white field, called siniristilippu, the Blue Cross Flag. It was adopted soon after independence from Russia in 1917, with its final form set by artists Eero Snellman and Bruno Tuukkanen. The state version adds the coat of arms.

About the flag of Finland

What it means: People often say the blue stands for Finland's many lakes and its sky, and the white for winter snow.

Did you know? One rejected entry in the flag contest had diagonal blue and white stripes, which critics said looked better suited to a barber shop.
